Retreat West Books has today launched a new annual prize for undiscovered writers and novels. The annual prize will award the winner with a publishing contract for a paperback and ebook edition of the novel, plus a £500 advance.
Two runners-up will also receive a prize and all writers that enter will receive an ebook edition of the winning novel when it is published.
Retreat West Books Founder, Amanda Saint, said: “The aim is to find exciting new authors and bring their work to the world through the competition while also giving them a small advance for their novel and raising its profile in advance of publication. We specify that the writers must be previously unpublished, and without literary agent representation, as we want to give a chance to writers that may be finding it difficult to get published through the traditional route despite their novels being of a very high standard.
We’re hoping that by launching this annual competition we will also reach more writers that may not have heard of Retreat West Books yet and discover some truly excellent novels.”
Retreat West Books is a boutique independent press that was founded in 2017, initially to publish the winning stories from the annual Retreat West Short Story and Flash Fiction Prizes. It opened for submissions in December 2017 and has since commissioned three short story collections and one novel. It also published a charity climate-fiction anthology in April 2018, which is donating profits to the Earth Day Network; and is publishing another charity anthology in November 2018 in association with the 100 Years March, marking the anniversary of 100 years of women’s suffrage. Profits from this anthology are being donated to a London charity, Hestia, that helps people in times of crisis.
