Writers around Southampton are being invited to submit proposals for new work to be showcased at the city’s SO: To Speak Festival of Words at the end of October. Southampton Festivals, which organises SO: To Speak, and ArtfulScribe, will be awarding two commissions of £500 for pieces on the festival’s theme ‘Changing Times’.

The festival and the commissions are supported by Arts Council England, and applicants have to submit their proposals by 11th August, with the successful writers developing them ready to perform in the autumn.

“We are so excited to be able to encourage, support and showcase local writers to produce new materialfor the festival.” says Charlie Hislop, the Festival Director. “We chose ‘Changing times’ as the theme because I think we all recognise the scale and speed of change happening all around us at the moment. We are also paying a little homage to Bob Dylan, the 2017 Nobel Literature Laureate, who – probably coincidentally – came to Southampton during the SO: To Speak Festival two years ago!”

“We are looking forward to receiving original and creative ideas from local writers who can benefit from the support and endorsement offered by these commissions” says Matt West of ArtfulScribe. “It can be Spoken Word, theatre, poetry, monologue, fiction or non-fiction – we are looking to be able to show off the best of the region’s writing at the Festival.”

Details of the call for submissions, and more information, can be found online here and the closing date is 11th August.
