John Townsend writes a wide range of books for children of all ages, from fiction and plays to non-fiction and reading schemes for schools.
Before becoming a fulltime writer, John was a secondary school teacher when very few books were being published for older struggling readers. He began publishing short stories and plays as high-interest/low readability books, particularly designed to ‘switch on the switched-off reader’. Subsequently, he expanded his repertoire to include non-fiction books, reading schemes, picture books for the early years, crime-solving tales and young adult fiction.
John has been a story-teller in primary schools, has written for a theatre company and is included among the National Literacy Trust’s ‘Reading Champions’. He is passionate about engaging all ages with books, stories and information. That also involves recording ‘talking newspapers’ for the visually impaired where he lives in Devon.
