We are delighted to announce Quay Words Winter, a second season celebrating words and stories at Exeter Custom House. This programme, commissioned by Exeter Canal and Quay Trust will run between National Poetry Day, 3rd October 2019 and 31st March 2020.

Quay Words Winter opens on Thursday 3rd October with a special event for National Poetry Day – Poetry, Place and Haiku is a celebration of local people’s contributions to the recent Heritage Open Days events in the city.  An exciting collaboration with the University of Exeter’s Places of Poetry project will see poet Sara-Jane Arbury reciting a renga of haiku created by people in Exeter.  This is a free event.  Find out more and book your places here.

We’ll be making author readings a regular feature of Quay Words Winter. Bringing to your doorstep writing talent from far afield and close to home, these will be an opportunity to enjoy writers’ work and put your questions to them. Author events will be on the second Wednesday of every month. The first is Poetry Positive on Wednesday 13th November with acclaimed novelist and poet Joe Dunthorne and celebrated performance poet Matt Harvey – the perfect antidote to those long, dark November evenings.Book your tickets here.

As October draws to a close, we’ll be welcoming three local schools to the Custom House for a series of workshops with our partners from Cornwall, KEAP and their Writers’ Block immersive, theatrical creative writing project. These sessions will be all about inspiring the next generation of writers to think outside of the box and get creative with words.

If like us, you’re filled with motivation to put pen to pen this season, look out for our writing courses at the Custom House, coming soon. We want these to be as accessible to as many of you as possible so there will be two sets of weekly courses running one on a Saturday and one during a weekday evening. We’ll be sharing details of these soon, they will be announced here. Looking further ahead, we’ll also be teaming up with the Writers’ & Artists’ Yearbook to bring our collaborative event ‘How to Get Published’ event to Exeter on Saturday 14th March 2020. Schedule and booking details to be released here soon.

We’re busy programming the Quay Words Winter season and you’ll see new events appearing over the next few weeks. The full programme will be listed here, where you will also find all the booking information you need.
