The competition is open to anyone 16 + years and entries must be original plays not previously published or publicly performed.

The play should be for a maximum of four adult actors and suitable for a studio space but there is no theme or restriction on location. Running-time should be 25-35 minutes.

Entries must be in English, typed, on A4 and you can send as many as you like but please note that they will not be returned, so keep a copy. The author’s name must NOT appear on the manuscript but the title must be included on every page. (Writers from outside the UK may send work by email contact the office for details.)

Entries should be posted, together with the entry form, to the same address and cheques should be made payable to Sterts. Paypal payment is an option through Sterts website, or BACS, contact the office for details.

The prize for the winning entry will be £100 and a performance of the play on the evening of the 7th March 2020. The runner-up will receive £40 and there will be a staged reading of the play on the same evening. In addition a prize of £40 will be awarded to a play by a playwright who is under 30 years, (same rules apply). Sterts Arts Centre reserves the right to stage any or all of the winning plays, without further payment, within one calendar year of the closing date. We work with the successful writers to stage their plays as effectively as we can. If major alterations are deemed necessary we will consult the writer who will have the right to withdraw the work from performance if they are not happy with the changes.

Judging is fair and unbiased. The lead judge is Jenny Alexander who describes herself as a “Free Range Writer”. The judges’ decision is final and no individual correspondence can be entered into. Prize winners will be notified in writing in early December. Sterts Arts Centre is not liable for any expenses incurred by entrants to the competition.
