Michael Morpurgo stands up for villages in Devon

Award-winning author and former children’s laureate, Michael Morpurgo, will take a light-hearted look at his writing life next month as part of a fund-raising appeal for Villages in Action of which he is a patron.

On Friday 11th September at 7.30pm, an audience at Honiton’s Beehive Centre will quiz the Devon writer about the heroes he has encountered, in his imagination and elsewhere, during 22 years as an author and champion of children. The tickets are £20 (to include a glass of fizz and canapes) and are available from The Beehive Arts and Community Centre, Honiton 01404 384050

Michael Morpurgo has the inside scoop on many celebrated characters; Private Tommo Peaceful and Joey the War Horse…not to mention Steven Spielberg, Helen Mirren and Benedict Cumberbatch, with whom he collaborated on adaptations of his books.

He say he supports Villages in Action (ViA) because the scheme brings critically-acclaimed performance to village halls across Devon, and the revenue produced is often instrumental in keeping these hubs open.“ViA brings the world into our village halls, engages us with words and music, stories and ideas. It helps keep village life alive.”

The charity has 22 years’ experience booking international acts from Kneehigh Theatre to Kathryn Roberts and Sean Lakeman, ensuring rural communities experience performances comparable to the best in urban arts. ViA hopes that Devonians committed to the ongoing vibrancy of rural life will consider setting up standing orders, legacies or make one-off donations. Every act they book requires a subsidy.

The fund-raiser will be a lively affair with supportive Devon businesses laying on fizz and canapés and Morpurgo stands poised to sign his books. Of course there’s no guarantee Morpurgo will gossip about his celebrity acquaintances, but there’s only one way to find out…
