Structuring a novel is one of the trickiest tasks of writing. How do you put the scaffolding in place, the rods and planks that will make your story hold up? And how do you make sure that when you’ve built your book, the scaffolding is invisible? This workshop is from former Arvon tutor and highly experienced novelist Louise Doughty and looks at different ways of structuring a story and how to fix a narrative structure when it’s going wrong. Using her sixth novel, Whatever You Love (nominated for both the Costa and Orange prizes), as a worked example, Louise will talk through three different methods of structuring the same story and discuss the relative merits of each. This workshop takes place on publication day for the paperback of Louise Doughty’s ninth novel, Platform Seven.

The masterclass will be delivered via Zoom and will last two hours (11:00am – 13:00pm) including time for you to write. You will need to have a computer or smart device and a reliable internet connection in order to participate.
