Budleigh Salterton Literary Festival has launched a poetry competition on the theme of ‘space’ for budding young writers.

The competition is open to anyone aged five to 12-years-old and the winning entrant will be awarded a £50 book token to be presented to them at the glittering Festival launch party on Tuesday 17th September.

Poems must be no more than 600 words long and should be handed in to Budleigh Salterton, Exmouth or Sidmouth libraries, or emailed to story@budlitfest.org.uk by Friday 5th July 2019.

Annie Ashworth, the Festival’s Artistic Director, explained: “Budleigh Salterton Literary Festival is committed to supporting and inspiring the next generation of writers. This is a challenging but also a very exciting theme that we hope will get the creative juices flowing.

“We’re open to poems of any style, as long as they are clearly on the theme of space. The judges are looking for work that show real creativity and imagination. We look forward to seeing everyone’s entries.”

Entrants must be between the ages of five and 12 at the date of submission and all entries should clearly include the child’s name, address and date of birth. Read the full competition terms and conditions here.

Annie added: “Plans are well underway for this year’s Festival and we have an impressive line-up of events, including a whole host of activities for children. The children’s marquee on the green will have a space theme this year too and there is sure to be some out of this world fun.”

The 2019 Budleigh Salterton Literary Festival will take place from Wednesday 18th to Sunday 22nd September and will bring critically acclaimed authors, broadcasters and poets to the seaside town. The programme will also include workshops, children’s events, open mic nights and events in local schools.

The space-themed children’s marquee on the green will be open on Saturday 21st September and Sunday 22nd September for free, drop-in space adventures with exciting intergalactic activities, storytelling sessions and crafts to make.

The full Festival line-up will be revealed on 1st July with tickets available to purchase online or from the box office from 8th July. For more information, visit the website.
