Before Christmas we told you about Holland Park Press’ ‘Foreign Voices’ poetry competition and we were delighted to hear that South West based poet Karen Hayes has been chosen as the winner for her poem The Belgians.

In their announcement of the news, Holland Park Press said:

The quality of the poems entered this year was very high and the judges had the delightful though difficult task to decide upon the winning poem.

The judges commented:

‘The Belgians stood out because its multilayered use of the migration theme and its beautiful use of words and rhythm. Karen Hayes uses the maximum number of lines and holds one’s attention throughout. The Belgians ends with a wonderful indirect twist which takes your breath away.’

Congratulations Karen!
