Budding writers across the UK are being invited to submit their own poem or short story to be in with the chance of winning up to £1,000.

The Budleigh Salterton Literary Festival, in partnership with hearing specialists Audify®, has launched a competition to find the best short story or poem on the theme of ‘Being There’.

The competition is split into three categories: 7-11 years, 12-16 years and 17+, with £100, £250 and £1,000 to be awarded to the winner of each category respectively.

Annie Ashworth, Festival Director said: “This competition aims to inspire amateur and budding authors to challenge themselves and to explore their passion for writing. The theme ‘Being There’ can be interpreted in many different ways, so we will be very interested to read all of the entries.

“Plans for this year’s Festival are now well under way and we are looking forward to announcing the line-up. We will reveal the competition winners at a special Festival event and there will be the opportunity to read some of the entries at the Festival.”

Exeter-based Audify® is the festival’s main sponsor for 2017. The hearing specialists, with offices in Matford, believe in empowering individuals to reach and maintain their potential by keeping hearing at its best.

Curtis Alcock, Audify’s Managing Director said: “Words and language are such a crucial part of our lives that it goes without saying how important hearing is for bringing people together, sharing ideas, and enabling us to see the world through another’s eyes.

“Budleigh Salterton Literary Festival is a wonderful demonstration of this, so we were naturally keen to support the festival again this year.”

The 2017 Budleigh Salterton Literary Festival will run from 13-17 September and will include talks from award-winning authors, workshops and a programme of children’s events.

Short stories must be a maximum of 2,000 words, and poems a maximum of 600 words and must reflect the theme ‘Being There’. Entries should be submitted to story@budlitfest.org.uk, with your name, address and date of birth included.

Deadline for entries is 31st July 2017. For full terms and conditions and entry details, visit the Budleigh Salterton Festival website.
