Literature Works is delighted to announce a live literature tour of writers to libraries around the region in 2018.

Thanks to funding from Arts Council England’s Strategic Touring Fund, Literature Works will use a grant of £53,761 to stage literature events at 26 library venues across Devon, Somerset, and Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.  It is a partnership between Literature Works and SWRLS, the South Western Regional Library Service.

The focus of the tour will be on towns and locations that have less access to cultural opportunities. The thinking behind it is simple but powerful – a series of live, curated events showcasing the region’s writing talents.  Each event will feature two writers; pairing poets, novelists, non-fiction writers and performance-based authors in exciting combinations.

Phil Gibby, Area Director, South West, Arts Council England, said: “Reading, writing and performance have a crucial role to play in our society, enabling people to understand each other’s stories and their own. So, we are delighted to be supporting Literature Works to develop Word on Tour through our National Lottery funded Strategic Touring programme. By taking exciting and accessible live literature into community libraries, the project will engage new audiences with the positive benefits of words, in all their forms, and develop an infrastructure for live literature across the South West.”

Helen Chaloner, CEO of Literature Works said, “This is great news for libraries, for writers and for local communities in towns around the South West.  We want to celebrate the amazing writing talent of our region and we want people to share the joy of literature: what better venue than the local library!”

There will be three legs to the tour –

Devon from January to March, taking in Okehampton, Tiverton, Ilfracombe, Cullompton, Torquay, Paignton, Brixham and Petroc FE College libraries.

Cornwall and Scilly from April to June, taking in Isles of Scilly, Penzance, Bodmin, St Austell, and St Ives libraries

Somerset from June to September, taking in Yeovil College, Bridgwater, Burnham, Cheddar, Nether Stowey, Taunton College, Minehead, Healthy Living Centre Weston, Campus Weston, Worle, Pill, and Weston libraries.
