I have been a professional writer for thirty years, working initially as a news reporter for West Country newspapers and the Press Association. For twenty-five years I worked as a full-time travel writer for Lonely Planet and AA Publishing.
I am currently writing a series of non-fiction books. The first is The Almost Island: Atlantic Cornwall, which was partly self-financed. The Almost Island was published by Scryfa in 2017 and has sold approximately 750 copies. The book is a collection of mainly short essays, with some verse, about the cliff landscape of West Cornwall and the seas around Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, (Before I became a writer I was a commercial fisherman for fifteen years.)
The Almost Island was nominated for a Holyer an Gof award in 2018. The writer, Philip Marsden described the book as being ‘A work of beauty – lyrical, evocative and closely observed.’
Scryfa is publishing a sequel to The Almost Island, titled The Long Deep, in May 2019.
I do talks and spoken word events at literary festivals, libraries, hotels and writers’ groups.
