Contract: part time

Location: Taunton

About the role

Halsway Manor will be undergoing renovations and the development of its library as part of an Heritage Lottery funded project. As part of its connected programme of activities Halsway would like to offer a poetry residency.

Published poets at all stages of their career are invited to apply for an offer of up to four weeks in residence, spread into mutually agreed shorter periods between May 2018 and March 2019, to create new work inspired by the manor and the collections within the library.

The successful applicant will be offered:

  • Accommodation in the manor with a space to work and meals
  • A bursary of £1000 to cover any expenses
  • The opportunity to publish work created in pamphlet/chapbook form
  • Halsway will undertake to promote the poet and their work and support them during their time here.

The writer’s time will be their own, to settle, to explore, to research and to create new work inspired by Halsway Manor, its library and the surrounding landscape. Halsway Manor are open to both traditional and more experimental work – they want the poet to have a chance to develop in a way that is beneficial to them and nurtures high quality writing, whilst providing a meaningful creative legacy for the project.

In return Halsway Manor require the writer to:

  • Create a new body of work inspired by the manor and the collections of the Halsway Manor library to be published in pamphlet/chapbook form.
  • Run a minimum of one workshop/talk for the community during their time here.
  • To represent the Halsway Manor poetry residency for promotional and press purposes.

To apply writers must:

  • Submit a sample of work, up to five poems, direct us to previously published work. Applicants should be published, but may be at early stages of their career.
  • Submit CV including publishing history and any workshop experience.
  • Write covering letter explaining why you would like the post and how you imagine you might interpret or be inspired by a heritage and folk arts setting.

Closing deadline

30th April 2018
