Poetry Postie ( aka Sally Crabtree ) is delighted to have been awarded a major Arts Council Grants for the Arts award to deliver poetic inspiration to the Nation. This follows a recent cultural exchange in China which led to the Poetry Postie being invited by the Universal Postal Union ( UPU ) to deliver poetic inspiration to the UN for their 70th year celebrations at the Palais de Nations in Geneva. As a result of this collaboration , a series of international events, performances and educational/community workshops was devised that could culminate in a celebratory event for UPU’s World Post Day on October 9th 2016.
For the project, the Poetry Postie will deliver an innovative creative literacy scheme to schoolchildren and community organizations across Cornwall inspiring those taking part to create poetry postcards, lyrical letters, Sing o Grams and Peace parcels that will become part of the Poetry Postie’s Post bag. These will then be delivered ‘ On the Rounds ‘ to the community and at a final celebratory event with the UPU on World Post Day. The Poetry Postie will also launch a poetry pen pal cultural exchange in Japan thanks to the support of the Sasakawa Foundation and will R&D an App that will allow users to create and send poetry postcards and messages of love, peace and happiness across the globe via Mr Love a Dove, the Pigeon Post of Peace. As an official ambassador for National Poetry Day (whose theme this year is messages) the Poetry Postie will also be flying poems via pigeon poetry post.
Of the project Sally says “ It is so exciting. It aims to inspire whole communities and explore the notion of communication – communicating with oneself (something poetry helps one to do, ) with those close to you and those further away – and to get communities communicating and allow them to discover the poetic heart of themselves. The project aims to raise aspirations and show everyone that there is a big world out there – one that they can forge a link with. To remind us, through poetry, that that underneath it all we are all part of one community – the world.
Catch the Poetry Postie on her rounds where she may just have a poetic letter or singing telegram for you . Pick out a package or jump on the bike, ring the bell and be entertained by the Poetry Postie herself!
