Bristol City Poet callout

Lyra (Bristol Poetry Festival) are now accepting applications to become Bristol’s fifth City Poet, 2024-2026. This opportunity is open to any poet who lives in Bristol.

The ideal candidate will:

  • Have 3+ years of experience as a poet (either in published page poetry, performance / spoken word, or any poetic practice).
  • Have a track record of printed work or writing to commissions, and be a confident performer.
  • Have a track record of working with community groups and be passionate about taking an inclusive approach to community outreach, ensuring that sessions are welcoming and accessible to people of different backgrounds and experience with poetry.
  • Be interested in, and excited by, the city of Bristol and its stories, communities, history and future.

The City Poet is required to:

  • Compose 10 poems for specific events, moments, anniversaries etc over the next two years.
  • Take part in public performances, as part of civic and community events.
  • Run workshops and take part in community engagement activities, including an active role during Lyra’s annual poetry festival in April where they will act as resident poet.

There is a fixed, non-negotiable annual fee of £5,000.

Applications from those currently underrepresented in the arts community, particularly any applicant who identifies as working-class, as part of the global majority, transgender, non-binary or LGBTQ+, D/deaf, visually impaired, disabled or neurodivergent, are welcomed.
