Join us for the launch of ‘Queer and Zine’ created by Down Stage Write and Ink Snails Collective for the Heritage Action Zone.
The Zine will be launched at 6pm on the 30th of June at The Old Queeriosity Bookshop, Bretonside. Grab a hot off the press copy of ‘Queer and There’, join us for an informal exploration of the Heritage Action Zone and the chance to make your own zine!

The Zine is called Queer and There and is an interactive magazine designed to share Plymouth’s LGBTQIA+ history and encourage people to engage with the heritage action zone at the heart of the city. It will include writing, poetry, sound and illustrations sharing the past, present and future of Plymouth City Centre through a queer lens. Down Stage Write CIC commissioned seven LGBTQ writers from the area and two LGBTQ illustrators (from Ink Snails Collective) to create the 40 page booklet based on research, workshops with the queer community and their own stories and creativity.

The project is funded by High Street Sparks to raise awareness of the Heritage Action Zone at the heart of the city which includes quite a few sites connected to Plymouth’s LGBTQ history including the route of the first Plymouth Pride, first Trans Pride, the Lockyer Tavern, Zeros and others, as well as being connected to the emerging Queer District. The Project seeks to use the Zine to celebrate the queer history of Plymouth, the exciting things happening here right now and also to dream about what a queer future of Plymouth might look like. The company ran workshops to raise awareness of the history and also to collect people’s own experiences and memories of being queer in the city.

What is the conservation zone?

The High Street Action Zone is a specially designated conservation area around Royal Parade and the Civic Square and there is a great four year programme about celebrating, enhancing and adapting the City Centre’s post-war heritage and making it a more attractive, engaging and vibrant place for people to live, work and spend time goin on. High Street Sparks has been funding cultural events and projects taking place and responding to the zone and Queer and There is one of the latest projects to be funded.
